Towards 2010 The European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion - Caritas Europa

Brussels, 17 July 2008 -
Poverty is tragically present in the EU and people suffering from it are in urgent need for help. Reports from the European Commission show that more than 100 million people in the EU currently live with a maximum income of 22 euro a day, as almost 80 million are at risk of poverty.

Driven by its deep commitment with those suffering of poverty and social exclusion, Caritas Europa looks through the figures to see the people behind them.

In a recent message to the member organisation, Erny Gillen, President, underlines the support given by Caritas Europa to the designation of the European Year 2010.

Now that the European legislative procedure to officially proclaim this year is successfully coming to an end, the organisation is pleased with this development and congratulates the European Union's decision makers for the result.

As a key stakeholder in the area of social protection and social inclusion, Caritas Europa looks forward to being actively involved, jointly with its member organisations, in shaping this important year at European and national level.
